How to Properly Format Your SD Card for Nintendo Switch

Expanding your Nintendo Switch storage with an SD card is a great idea, but it’s important to format it correctly to avoid any issues down the road. Before you begin, make sure to back up any important files on the card, as formatting will erase everything.

For Windows users, simply insert the SD card and go to ‘This PC.’ Right-click on the card and select ‘Format.’ Choose the FAT32 file system to ensure compatibility with your Switch. If you’re using a Mac, you can do this through Disk Utility. Just select your card, hit ‘Erase,’ and again, choose FAT32.

After formatting, pop the SD card back into your Nintendo Switch. You may need to check the system settings to ensure the card is recognized, but once that’s done, you’re all set to download games and save data without the worry of running out of space.
